This tincture is recommended for diarrhoea. It contains herbal astringents to relieve diarrhoea in combination with anti-inflammatory herbs to sooth and heal the GIT. If traveller’s diarrhoea or food poisoning is suspected, combine with Carahealth Immune.
Agrimony Agrimony eupatorium - Agrimony is astringent, tonic, bitter, diuretic, vulnerary, anti-spasmodic, carminative, hepatic and cholagogue. Its astringency and bitter tonic properties makes agrimony especially indicated when an astringent action on the digestive system is needed. It is traditionally a spring tonic. It may be used as a symptomatic treatment for diarrhoea and especially in the treatment of the functional conditions known variously as irritable bowel syndrome or colitis. It can be useful in urinary incontinence and cystitis. Agrimony is specific to relieve diarrhoea.
Oak bark Quercus robur – Oak bark is astringent, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic. Oak Bark may be used wherever a strong astringent is indicated, for example in unresponsive diarrhoea or dysentery. Oak bark is a powerful astringent that has been used by herbalists for thousands of years for acute diarrhoea. Althea officinalis (Marshmallow root) – Marshmallow is demulcent, emollient, diuretic, anti-inflammatory and expectorant. Its’ abundance of mucilage makes Marshmallow an excellent demulcent that is indicated for all inflammatory conditions of the G-I tract, e.g. inflammations of the mouth, gastritis, peptic ulceration, colitis etc. Priest & Priest says it is a "soothing demulcent indicated for inflamed and irritated states of mucous membranes. Particularly suitable for inflammatory conditions of the gastro-intestinal system such as gastroenteritis or diarrhoea”.
Fenugreek seeds Trigonella foenum-graecum – Fenugreek is anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, cardiotonic, carminative, demulcent, deobstruent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, febrifuge, galactogogue, hypoglycaemic, hypocholesterolamic, hypotensive, parasiticide and restorative. Fenugreek is much used in herbal medicine, especially in North Africa, the Middle East and India. Research has shown that the seeds can inhibit cancer of the liver, lower blood cholesterol levels and also have an antidiabetic effect. The seed yields a strong mucilage and are therefore useful in the treatment of inflammation and ulcers of the stomach and intestines. The seeds are very nourishing and body-building and is one of the most efficacious tonics in cases of physical debility caused by anaemia or by infectious diseases, especially where a nervous factor is involved. It is also used in the treatment of late-onset diabetes, poor digestion (especially in convalescence), insufficient lactation, painful menstruation, labour pains etc. The seeds freshen bad breath and restore a dulled sense of taste. Compounds extracted from the plant have shown cardiotonic, hypoglycaemic, diuretic, anti-inflammatory and hypotensive activity. One of its constituent alkaloids, called 'trigonelline', has shown potential for use in cancer therapy. The seed contains the saponin diosgenin, an important substance in the synthesis of oral contraceptives and sex hormones. Fenugreek acts as a carminative to lessen any colic associated with constipation. In Ayurvedic medicine, Methi (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is known to have anti-carcinogenic properties and reduce blood cholesterol levels. It is also used as a laxative. The seeds should not be prescribed medicinally for pregnant women since they can induce uterine contractions.
Asthma Weed Euphorbia hirta - Asthma weed is anodyne, antiasthmatic, antipruritic carminative, depurative, diuretic, febrifuge, galactogogue, purgative, VD, vermifuge and treats warts. Asthma weed has traditionally been used in Asia to treat colds, whooping cough, bronchitis, catarrh; asthma, bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) such as emphysema, bronchiectasis and pneumonia.bronchitic asthma and laryngeal spasm. In modern herbalism it is more it is specifically used in the treatment of intestinal amoebic dysentery.
Purchasing and additional information
All herbs are 40 euro per bottle except for Carahealth Memory, Carahealth Antiageing, Carahealth Immune, Carahealth Male, Carahealth Adapt and Carahealth Anticancer, Carahealth Chemotherapy support and Carahealth Partus Prep which are 45 euro. Herbs are sold in a miniumum of 2 bottles at a time or one month supply (this can be a combination of 2 different tonics such as a Partus Prep and Birth Aid). This is because you will need a minimum of one month to see a real effect in chronic conditions, although if the herbal tonic is right for you, you should expect to see some improvement of your condition within the 2 weeks. As a rough guide, I say for every year you have had a condition you need a month of treatment. All herbal tinctures come in 200ml bottles, taken at either 5ml 3 x day or 7 1/2 ml 2 x day. One bottle taken at this therapeutic dose will last 2 weeks. All herbs are either 1 in 1s or 1 in 2s meaning they are 1 part herb in 1 or 2 parts liquid respectively, as opposed to other herbs on the Irish and UK market which are either 1 in 3s or 1 in 5s. Therefore my tinctures are at least 2 x greater in strength and effectiveness. They are also organic or wildcrafted where available and I do not use endangered species.
