The plant is also part of a North American formula called Essiac, which is a popular treatment for cancer. The plant is antibacterial, antifungal, carminative and can be used to treat fungal infection such as candida. Recent research has shown that seed extracts lower blood sugar levels. It should not be used with Glycyrrhiza species (Liquorice) because this nullifies the effects of the berberine. Berberine has also shown anti-tumour activity and is also effective in the treatment of hypersensitive eyes, inflamed lids and conjunctivitis.
