White horehound Marrubrium vugare- White horehound is an antiseptic, antispasmodic, bitter, cholagogue, diaphoretic, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, hepatic, stimulant and tonic. Horehound is a very valuable pectoral, expectorant and tonic that can be safely used by children as well as adults. It is known as the trophorestorative of the lungs, meaning it is the primary remedy for the lungs. The herb apparently causes the secretion of a more fluid mucous, readily cleared by coughing. It is indicated for colds, whooping cough, asthma, bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases and generalised catarrhal conditions. As a bitter tonic, it increases the appetite and supports the function of the stomach.
Thyme Thymus vulgaris– Thyme is anthelmintic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aromatherapy, carminative, deodorant, diaphoretic, disinfectant, expectorant, sedative and tonic. It is very rich in essential oils and these are the active ingredients responsible for most of the medicinal properties. In particular, thyme is valued for its antiseptic and antioxidant properties, it is an excellent tonic and is used in treating respiratory diseases and a variety of other ailments. The plant is used internally in the treatment of dry coughs, whooping cough, bronchitis, bronchial catarrh, asthma, laryngitis, indigestion, gastritis and diarrhoea and enuresis in children. With its high content of volatile oil, Thyme makes a good carminative for use in dyspepsia and sluggish digestion. This oil is also a strongly antiseptic substance, which explains many of Thyme's uses. It is used internally for respiratory and digestive infections. As a stimulating expectorant, it helps to bring up phlegm. It is indicated for colds, whooping cough, bronchitis, catarrh, asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases. Thyme has an antioxidant effect, thus regular use of this herb improves the health and longevity of individual body cells and therefore prolongs the life of the body.
Liquorice Glycyrrhiza glabra – Liquorice is alterative, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, laxative, pectoral and tonic. It is a very sweet, moist, soothing herb that detoxifies and protects the liver and is also powerfully anti-inflammatory, being used in conditions as varied as arthritis and mouth ulcers. The constituents, glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinic acid, inhibit 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase . This inhibition blocks metabolism of prostaglandins E and F2 alpha and may be responsible for peptic ulcer healing. Liquorice has also been shown to have a hormonal effect similar to the ovarian hormone. Liquorice root is much used in cough medicines and also in the treatment of catarrhal infections of the urinary tract. It is taken internally in the treatment of Addison's disease, asthma, bronchitis, coughs, peptic ulcers, gastric and duodenal ulcers, arthritis, allergic complaints and following steroidal therapy. In TCM liquorice is said to be sweet, neutral and warm. It enters all 12 meridians but mainly the heart, lung, spleen and stomach meridians. Liquorice tonifies the spleen & stomach Qi and is used to treat digestive disorders, moisten the lungs and stops dry cough, tonifies the heart Qi to regulates pulse, clears heat & toxic fire, alleviates pain, stops spasms, harmonise & moderates the characteristics of other herbs and is an antidote for toxicity. It should be used in moderation and should not be prescribed for pregnant women or people with high blood pressure, kidney disease or taking digoxin-based medication. Prolonged usage raises the blood pressure and causes water retention.
Asthma Weed Euphorbia hirta - Asthma weed is anodyne, antiasthmatic, antipruritic carminative, depurative, diuretic, febrifuge, galactogogue, purgative, anti-VD, vermifuge and kills warts. Asthma weed has traditionally been used in Asia to treat bronchitis, asthma and laryngeal spasm, though in modern herbalism it is used in the treatment of intestinal amoebic dysententary. The herb relaxes the bronchioles but apparently depresses the heart and general respiration. It is usually used in combination with other anti-asthma herbs such as Grindelia camporum and Lobelia inflata.
Astragalus / Huang Qi Astragalus membranaceus - Astragalus is an adaptogen, antibacterial, anti-cancer, cardiotonic, diuretic, febrifuge, hypoglycaemic, hypotensive, pectoral, tonic, uterine tonic and vasodilator. Huang Qi is commonly used in Chinese herbalism. The root is a sweet tonic herb that stimulates the immune system and many organs of the body, whilst lowering blood pressure and blood sugar levels. It is particularly suited to young, physically active people, increasing stamina and endurance and improving resistance to the cold. For younger people it is superior to ginseng in this respect. Huang Qi is used especially for treatment of the kidneys and also to avoid senility. It is used in the treatment of cancer, prolapse of the uterus or anus, abscesses and chronic ulcers, chronic nephritis with oedema and proteinuria. Recent research in the West has shown that the root can increase the production of interferon and macrophages and thus help restore normal immune function in cancer patients. Patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy recover faster and live longer if given Huang Qi concurrently. It increases the production of blood cells. In TCM, astragalus is said to tonify spleen & lung Qi, raise Spleen & Stomach Qi and is used to treat prolapse, tonify Wei Qi to boost the immune system, tonify Qi & blood due to loss of blood to treat postpartum fever. Astragalus is specific for chronic cough.

It is therefore effective as a calming agent in the treatment of asthma

All herbs are either 1 in 1s or 1 in 2s meaning they are 1 part herb in 1 or 2 parts liquid respectively, as opposed to other herbs on the Irish and UK market which are either 1 in 3s or 1 in 5s. Therefore my tinctures are at least 2 x greater in strength and effectiveness. They are also organic or wildcrafted where available and I do not use endangered species.
