Naturopathic Approaches to Prevent & Treat Pandemic Flu

swine flu

An influenza pandemic is an epidemic of an influenza virus that spreads on a worldwide scale and infects a large proportion of the world population. The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in history. It was caused by an H1N1 virus. 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide.  Mortality was high in people younger than 5 years old, 20-40 years old, and 65 years and older. Most experts believe another influenza pandemic will occur, but it is impossible to predict when or where it will appear or how severe it will be. Whilst covential medicine has little to offer to prevent and treat pandemic flu, herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, dietary and lifestyle approaches have an arsenal against flu virus.

Empathise with Your Body

empathy

Empathy is the experience of understanding another person's condition from their perspective, to place ourselves in other's shoes, feel what they are feeling. Many of us easily empathise with others but are unable to show empathy to ourselves when it comes to our own health. What I would like to discuss is how to empathise with our bodies in times of acute illness. The best way to show ourselves empathy in sickness is to preserve and tonify our Vital Forces by managing our fevers and adopting some good old fashioned convalescence

Fever Management & Convalescence

fever managment

Fever is  common in children, and it is one of the most common complaints for which parents take their children to the doctors or A&E. Most febrile episodes are not only not dangerous but are a beneficial response to an infection. Most of these infections are self-limited viral infections. Although fever is an indication that your child is healthy, it evokes fear and anxiety. It is not the fever itself but the possible complications of the fever and accompanying symptoms that give rise to fear. Fever phobia is described as unrealistic and exaggerated misconceptions of parents whose children have a fever. Fever phobia is driving the unnecessary use of antipyretics (drugs to suppress fever). Help boost your body's natural immunity don’t suppress the fever unless absolutely necessary.

Naturopathic Causes &Treatment of Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body. Autoimmune diseases result from the failure of an organism to recognise its own constituent parts as self, which allows an immune response against its own cells and tissues. The immune system mistakes some part of the body as a pathogen and attacks it. In other words, the body actually attacks its own cells.

What are Free Radicals & Antioxidants?

free radical and antioxidant

Free radicals are implicated in diseases such as arthritis, atherosclerosis, Parkinson’s, cancer, and Aids but what exactly is a free radical? A Free Radical is a molecule with an unpaired electron. It is highly unstable because of this and roams around in the circulation, stealing electrons from healthy cells, thereby destroying those cells.

Vitamin D & the Immune System

Vitamin D

The hormonally active form of vitamin D is called Cholecalciferol (D3). It binds to nuclear vitamin D receptors (VDR) which are present in most immune cells including monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, NK cells, T and B cells. Every cell on the body has a VDR cell. When these VDR receptors are activated this has potent anti-proliferative, pro-differentiative, and immunomodulatory functions including both immune-enhancing and immunosuppressive effects. In a nutshell vitamin D prevents excess cell growth as seen in cancer and allows for proper recognition of cancer cells by the immune cells. Vitamin D regulatse the immune system, which is important not only in immune deficiency diseases such as cancer but also in conditions of a hyperactive immune system such as seen in autoimmune disease.

Natural Anti-Virals

anti virals

Recent outbreaks of viral diseases in the advent of globalisation and ease of travel have underscored their prevention as a critical issue in safeguarding public health. Despite the progress made in immunisation and drug development, many viruses lack preventive vaccines and efficient antiviral therapies, as the virus naturally mutates. Herbal medicines have shown anti-viral action against many viral pathogens that do not have suitable vaccines or where the vaccine is available outbreaks are still apparent, viruses including coronavirus (CoV), coxsackievirus (CV), dengue virus (DENV), enterovirus 71 (EV71), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), herpes simplex virus, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), influenza virus, measles virus (MV), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The following are some natural antivirals
