Naturopathic Causes & Treatment of Asthma

Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterised by airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. The prevalence of asthma has increased significantly since the 1970s. As of 2009, 300 million people were affected worldwide. In 2009 asthma caused 250,000 deaths globally. Some 9% of US children had asthma in 2001, compared with just 3.6% in 1980. Ireland is now ranked among the top four countries in the world with the highest prevalence rates for asthma. The Asthma Society of Ireland has estimated that 274,000 people suffer from asthma in Ireland. Asthma affects at least 1 in 7 Irish children, and 1 in 20 adults. Australia has the highest incidence of asthma (and now the highest rates of obesity)

Naturopathic Causes & Treatment of Hayfever & Sinusitis

Hay fever, also known as Allergic Rhinitis, is an allergic inflammation of the nasal passages. It occurs when an allergen such as pollen or dust is inhaled by an individual with a sensitised immune system, triggering an antibody production. The antibody, called immunoglobulin E, or IgE, is stored on special cells called mast cells, which contain histamine. When the mast cells are stimulated by pollen and dust, histamine and other chemicals mediators are released. This causes itching, swelling, and mucus production.  Herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, dietary and lifestyle approaches can treat this condition naturally, without the use of pharmacological drugs.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflamatory disease that affects multiple organs in the body, but mostly the lungs and lymph glands. characterised by non-caseating granulomas (small inflammatory nodules). It most commonly arises in young adults. The cause of the disease is still unknown. Virtually any organ can be affected; however, granulomas most often appear in the lungs or the lymph nodes. Symptoms usually appear gradually but can occasionally appear suddenly. The clinical course generally varies and ranges from asymptomatic disease to a debilitating chronic condition that may lead to death.

Managing Asthma Naturally

Asthma is unfortunately becoming an increasingly common disorder. It is characterised by hypersensitivity of the airways resulting in bronchoconstriction. We all know that it is an allergic disorder and certainly asthmatic sufferers and their families are well aware of the common triggers for asthma such as dust mites, animal dander, pollens, grasses, moulds, exercise, pollution, cigarette smoke, cold air and drugs such as aspirin. What most asthmatics are not aware of however is that their diet can also be contributing to this disease. Certain foods and food additives increase inflammatory processes within the body resulting in excessive levels of a substance called leukotrienes. These are 1000 times more potent in promoting inflammation and bronchial constriction than histamine another inflammatory regulator. Other foods are actually anti-inflammatory.

Antiviral Essential Oils to prevent H1N1 Swine Flu

Swine flu mask

Essential oils from many plant families have demonstrated antiviral properties in laboratory. Many of the abstracts on Pub Med, the database of the National Institute of Health for peer-reviewed journal articles, describe essential oils activity as an excellent preventative measure. Use before exposure can lessen the potential of infection. This is the case for any type of virus, be it our 'regular' flu season or to the current potential pandemic threat of H1N1 swine flu. In this case, some advanced practitioners would apply small amounts of oil several times a day to the neck & sternum, &may even ingest one or two drops of an anti-viral oil blend.

Autumn is Lung Time

Autumn is Lung Time. Qi and the lungs In Chinese Medicine the lungs are said to govern Qi. Qi is frequently translated as "energy flow", and is often compared to the Western idea of √©lan vital or Vital Force. The literal translation is air or breath. In the body, lung Qi combines with food Qi to form the Zong Qi or the big Qi of the chest! This Qi is then sent all over the body to nourish the tissues, so healthy lungs mean a healthy system. Weak lungs can result in low energy and a weak immune system resulting in recurrent infections.
