Eye BrightEuphrasia officinalis - Eye bright is an anti-catarrhal, astringent and anti-inflammatory. Eyebright is an excellent remedy for the problems of mucous membranes. The combination of anti-inflammatory and astringent properties make it relevant in many conditions. Used internally it is a powerful anti-catarrhal and thus may be used in nasal catarrh, sinusitis and other congestive states. It is best known for its use in conditions of the eye, where it is helpful in acute or chronic inflammations, stinging and weeping eyes as well as over-sensitivity to light. Used as a compress externally in conjunction with internal use it valuable in conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Eyebright is specifically an upper respiratory tract anti-catarrhal.
Chrysanthemum/ Ju Hua Chrysanthemum sinensis – Crysanthemum is antiphlogistic, aperient, bitter, blood tonic, depurative; febrifuge, ophthalmic, stomachic, VD and vulnerary. The whole plant is antiphlogistic, blood tonic, depurative, febrifuge and vulnerary. The plant is used in China to treat eye ailments. In conjunction with black pepper it is used in the treatment of gonorrhoea. The leaves are depurative. They are used in China in the treatment of migraine. The flowers are aperient, bitter, hypotensive, stomachic and vasodilator. They contain the glycoside chrysanthemin that yields glucose and cyanidin on hydrolysis, together with stachydrine and an essential oil. They have an antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus, E. coli, streptococcus, C. diphtheriae, Bacillus dysenteriae. The flowers are used in the treatment of furuncle, scrofula, deep-rooted boils, inflammation of the throat, eyes and cervix, eczema, itchiness of the skin and hypertension. They have a rejuvenating effect when used over a long period of time. An essential oil obtained from the plant contains chrysanthenone, this is active on the brain centre affected by Parkinson's disease. IN TCM Ju hua is said to be sweet, bitter and cool and to enter the liver and lungs meridians. It disperses wind, clear heat and is indicated for headache and fever, clears the liver and is indicated for red-painful-dry eyes, excessive tearing and floaters, calms the liver and is indicated for dizziness, headache, deafness and blurred vision.
Astragalus / Huang QiAstragalus membranaceus Astragalus is an adaptogen, antibacterial, anti-cancer, cardiotonic, diuretic, febrifuge, hypoglycaemic, hypotensive, hepatic, kidney strengthening and ophthalmic, pectoral, tonic, uterine tonic, and vasodilator. Huang Qi is commonly used in Chinese herbalism. The root is a sweet tonic herb that stimulates the immune system and many organs of the body, whilst lowering blood pressure and blood sugar levels. It is particularly suited to young, physically active people, increasing stamina and endurance and improving resistance to the cold - indeed for younger people it is perhaps superior to ginseng in this respect. Huang Qi is used especially for treatment of the kidneys and also to avoid senility. It is used in the treatment of cancer, prolapse of the uterus or anus, abscesses and chronic ulcers, chronic nephritis with oedema and proteinuria. Huang Qi/Astragalus is used for treating the common cold and upper respiratory infections; to strengthen and regulate the immune system; and to increase the production of blood cells particularly in individuals with chronic degenerative disease or in individuals with cancer undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Recent research in the West has shown that the root can increase the production of interferon and macrophages and thus help restore normal immune function in cancer patients. Patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy recover faster and live longer if given Huang Qi concurrently. It increases the production of blood cells. In TCM, astragalus is said to tonify spleen & lung Qi, raises spleen & stomach Qi and is used to treat prolapse, tonifies the Wei Qi to boost the immune system, tonify Qi & blood due to loss of blood to treat postpartum fever. Astragalus is specific for chronic cough. In TCM, Astragalus can be combined with Dang gui to treat exhaustion from blood loss. The lifting quality of the astragalus can help to neutralise the downward draining property of Dang Gui, helping to prevent diarrhoea.
Bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus - Bilberry is antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, kidney tonic, ophthalmic and tonic. The dried leaves of bilberries are used in the treatment of a variety of complaints. A tea made from the dried leaves is strongly astringent, diuretic, tonic and an antiseptic for the urinary tract. It is also a remedy for diabetes if taken for a prolonged period. Another report says that the leaves can be helpful in pre-diabetic states but that they are not an alternative to conventional treatment. The leaves contain glucoquinones, which reduce the levels of sugar in the blood. A decoction of the leaves or bark is applied locally in the treatment of ulcers and in ulceration of the mouth and throat. A distilled water made from the leaves is an excellent eyewash for soothing inflamed or sore eyes. Whilst the fresh fruit has a slightly laxative effect upon the body, when dried it is astringent and is commonly used in the treatment of diarrhoea etc. The dried fruit is also antibacterial and a decoction is useful for treating diarrhoea in children. The skin of the fruits contains anthocyanin and is specific in the treatment of hemeralopia (day-blindness). The fruit is a rich source of anthocyanosides, which have been shown experimentally to dilate the blood vessels, this makes it a potentially valuable treatment for varicose veins, haemorrhoids and capillary fragility.
