Milk thistle Silybum marinarum – Milk thistle is astringent, bitter, cholagogue, diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, hepatic, stimulant, stomachic, tonic, hepatic, galactogogue, demulcent and cholagogue. Milk Thistle can be used to increase the secretion and flow of bile from the liver and gall bladder and contains constituents, which protect liver cells from chemical damage. Silymarin, an extract from the seed, acts on the membranes of the liver cells preventing the entry of virus toxins and other toxic compounds and thus preventing damage to the cells from toxic chemicals and medications. It is used internally in the treatment of liver and gall bladder diseases, jaundice, cirrhosis, hepatitis and poisoning. It is indicated in skin complaints associated with a sluggish liver. As a galactogogue it specifically stimulates the flow of breast milk. Milk thistle also lowers cholesterol levels, reducing insulin resistance and reduces the growth of cancer cells in breast, cervical and prostate cancers. For women who are trying to get pregnant, milk thistle balances the hormones to regulate ovulation and menstruation.
Chaste Tree Vitex agnus cactus – Vitex is a uterine tonic dopaminergic, and prolactin inhibiting. Its primary function is to regulate hormone levels via the Hypothalamic Pituitary Ovarian (HPA) access. Increased levels of the hormone prolactin are often responsible for menstrual irregularities and pre-menstrual syndrome. Agnus-castus has been shown to inhibit its production and clinical trials have demonstrated that this can help regularise the menstrual cycle, improving PMS symptoms of breast tenderness, mood swings, fluid retention and headache. Vitex is used to treat acne with a hormonal cause. As a hormonal regulator it is specific for Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). For women who are trying to get pregnant, vitex balances oestrogen and progesterone levels thereby regulating ovulation and increasing chance of conception. The berries are considered a tonic herb for both the male and female reproductive systems.
Damiana Turnera aphrodisiaca - Damiana is an antidepressant, stimulant, mild diuretic, mild laxative, thymoleptic, urinary antiseptic, mild purgative, reputed aphrodisiac, testosteromimetic, euphoric, nervine and stomachic. It is indicated for depression, nervous dyspepsia, atonic constipation, coital inadequacy, debility and lethargy. Specifically indicated in anxiety neurosis with a predominant sexual factor. Damiana is a valuable strengthening remedy for the nervous system. In particular, it has a stimulating and enhancing action on those functions related to the male reproductive system, especially where there is sexual inadequacy with a strong psychological or emotional element. The alkaloids are thought to have a testosteronal effect. It is of benefit in any debilitated condition of the central nervous system from anxiety and depression to neuralgia; and is used to contain genital herpes. Although considered to be a 'male' herb, it is not contraindicated for women with debilitated conditions. Testosterone is responsible for libido in woman.
Sarsaparilla Smilax ornata – Sarsaparilla is anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antipruritic. It is indicated for psoriasis and, chronic rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis and circulatory disorders such as erectile dysfunction(ED) and Raynauds ect. Sarsaparilla’s steroidal saponins exert an anti-inflammatory effect. It also has a diuretic action, flushing out chlorides and uric acid and therefore of benefit in gout and other rheumatic or arthritic conditions. It is also a blood cleanser used in the treatment of psoriasis and eczema. It is used as a tonic for sexual functioning and also as a rejuvenating tonic. It promotes blood flow to the genitals thereby increasing libido.
Blue cohosh Caulophylum thalictroides – Blue cohosh is antispasmodic, antirheumatic, diuretic, emmenagogue and uterine tonic. It is an excellent uterine tonic that may be used in any situation where there is a weakness or loss of tone. It may be used at any time during pregnancy if there is a threat of miscarriage. Similarly, because of its anti-spasmodic action, it will ease false labour pains and dysmenorrhoea. When labour ensues, the use of Blue Cohosh just before birth will help ensure an easy delivery, hence its traditional use as a partus preparatory. In all these cases it is a safe herb to use.
