Traditional Indications

This tincture is formulated to prevent and treat gravel and gallstones and alleviate pain. The tincture combines lipotropic herbs, which prevent gravel and stone formation, and lithotrophic herbs break down small stones and promote the flow of bile to eliminate the stones, combined with antispasmodic herbs, which relax the bile duct to facilitate elimination and alleviate pain. If the stones are large, there are potentially serious consequences. Treatment should be conducted only under the expert care of a health care professional. The tincture is perfectly safe to prevent gallstones and treat gall stone gravel and small stones that have been professionally diagnosed by ultrasound.

Mexican wild yam Dioscorea villosa – Wild yam is antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory (possibly steroidal),, antirheumatic, mild diaphoretic, cholagogue, diuretic, expectorant, relaxant for smooth muscle and mild peripheral vasodilator. Wild yam contains steroidal saponins. Wild yam is indicated for bilious colic, intestinal colic, functional colitis, colonic spasm, dysentery, diverticulitis, acute phase of rheumatoid arthritis, muscular rheumatism, rheumatic inflammatory conditions, cramps and intermittent claudication, cholecystitis, dysmenorrhoea, ovarian and uterine pain. Dioscorea has traditionally been used for easing menstrual cramps and for threatened miscarriage. Its antispasmodic action makes it good for flatulence and colic caused by muscle spasm. The herb also promotes the flow of bile and is sometimes used to ease the colic of gallstones. Its’ anti-inflammatory action is due to the steroidal saponins, and it is often used for the inflammatory stage of rheumatoid arthritis. It has a diuretic affect which, combined with its antispasmodic action, makes it useful in painful conditions of the urinary tract. Its antispasmodic action also makes it useful for treating poor circulation and neuralgia. It is given for intermittent claudication (pain in the calves caused by spasms in the blood vessels supplying the leg muscles). Dioscorea contains hormonal substances very similar to progesterone.

Cramp bark Viburnum opulus- Vib Op is spasmolytic, sedative, astringent, smooth and skeletal muscle relaxant, cardiac tonic, uterine relaxant and anti-inflammatory It is indicated for cramps, ovarian and uterine pains, spasmodic muscular cramp, uterine dysfunction, menopausal metrorrhagia, threatened miscarriage, partus preparator, infantile enuresis. Viburnum opulus is a specific remedy for visceral tensions. It helps to relax muscular tension and spasm and is primarily used in the treatment of muscular cramps and ovarian and uterine muscle problems. It relaxes the uterus and relieves the painful cramps associated with menstruation. It may also be used in threatened miscarriage. Its astringent action gives it a role in the treatment of excessive blood loss in periods and especially bleeding associated with the menopause. It may also be used to help quieten convulsive states in children. It relaxes the cardiovascular system in hypertension and eases constipation associated with tension. It also relieves migraine headaches.

Barberry Berberis vulgaris Barberry is antibacterial, antipruritic, antirheumatic, antiseptic, appetizer, astringent, anticancer, cholagogue, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, hepatic, laxative, ophthalmic, purgative, refrigerant, stomachic and tonic. It is indicated for correcting liver function and promoting the flow of bile to ameliorate conditions such as gallbladder pain, gallstones and jaundice. It is indicated when there is cholecystis (inflammation of the gall-bladder) or in the presence of Cholelithiasis (gallstones). When jaundice occurs due to a congested state of the liver, Barberry is also indicated. As a bitter tonic with mild laxative effects, it is used with weak or debilitated people to strengthen and cleanse the system. An interesting action is its ability to reduce an enlarged spleen. It acts against malaria and is also effective in the treatment of protozoal infection due to Leishmania spp. Berberine is antibiotic, immuno-stimulatory, antispasmodic, sedative, hypotensive, uterotonic, cholerectic, & carminative activity. As a traditional medicine or dietary supplement, berberine has showed some activity against fungal infections, candida, yeast, parasites, and bacterial/viral infections. Some research has been undertaken into possible use against infection. It is used orally in the treatment of various enteric infections, especially bacterial dysentery. It should not be used with Glycyrrhiza species (Liquorice) because this nullifies the effects of the berberine. Berberine has also shown anti-tumour activity and is also effective in the treatment of hypersensitive eyes, inflamed lids and conjunctivitis. The root bark has also been used as a purgative and treatment for diarrhoea and is diaphoretic. A tincture of the root bark has been used in the treatment of rheumatism, sciatica etc.

Fennel seed Foeniculum vulgare  Fennel is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, aromatic, carminative, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, galactogogue, hallucinogenic, circulatory stimulant, and stomachic. Fennel has a long history of herbal use and is a commonly used household remedy, being useful in the treatment of a variety of complaints, especially those of the digestive system. An infusion is used in the treatment of indigestion, abdominal distension, stomach pains etc. Fennel is often added to purgatives in order to allay their tendency to cause gripe, and also to improve flavour. An infusion of the seeds is a safe and effective cure for wind in babies and to promote breast milk in mothers. Helps open obstructions of the liver, gall bladder and spleen to ease painful swellings. Fennel is also used to treat yellow jaundice, the gout and occasional cramps.

Ginger root Zingiber officinalis  Ginger is antiflatulent, antitussive, antiemetic, adjuvant, anti-inflammatory, antispasmaodic, antiseptic. carminative, diaphoretic, expectorant, peripheral circulatory stimulant, rubefacient and sialagogue. It is indicated for poor circulation, chilblains and cramp and nausea. In feverish conditions Zingiber's diaphoretic action promotes perspiration. As a carminative it promotes gastric secretion and is used in the treatment of dyspepsia, flatulence and colic. It is also a useful remedy in diarrhoea where there is no inflammation or due to spleen Qi deficiency. It is stimulant to the gastro-intestinal tract, increasing peristalsis and the tone of the intestinal muscle. As an anti-emetic it can be used in cases morning sickness. It is also said to be useful for suppressed menstruation. Extracts of ginger stimulate the vasomotor and respiratory centres. Warming digestive tonic, this remedy will increase hydrochloric acid and improve iron absorption. Ginger contains very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols. These substances are believed to explain why so many people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis experience reductions in their pain levels and improvements in their mobility when they consume ginger regularly. Ginger extracts have been shown to have both antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour effects on cells. Gingerols, the main active components in ginger and the ones responsible for its distinctive flavour, may also inhibit the growth of human colorectal cancer cells. Lab experiments showed that gingerols, the active phytonutrients in ginger, kill ovarian cancer cells by inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) and autophagocytosis (self-digestion). In TCM fresh ginger is said to be pungent and warm. It enters the lung, spleen and stomach meridians. It is said to release the exterior and disperse cold in middle jiao and is indicated for vomiting. It is also said to disperse cold phlegm in lungs and is indicated for chronic and acute cough. Ginger reduces toxicity of other herbs or treating overdoses and adjusts ying and wei Qi for sweating without improvement. Ginger has been shown to shrinks liver tumours in animal testing. Also, impairs cholesterol absorption and stimulates the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids which further cleanses the liver and gall bladder. Ginger also inhibits platelet aggregation and thins the blood naturally.
