  • Prevention and treatment

Salix alba White Willow  White willow is anodyne, antiinflammatory, antiperiodic, antiseptic, astringent, diaphoretic, diuretic, febrifuge, hypnotic, sedative and tonic. Famous as the original source of salicylic acid (the precursor of aspirin), white willow and several closely related species have been used for thousands of years to relieve joint pain and manage fevers. It has been used internally in the treatment of dyspepsia connected with debility of the digestive organs, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, inflammatory stages of auto-immune diseases, feverish illnesses, neuralgia and headache. Its tonic and astringent properties render it useful in convalescence from acute diseases, in treating worms, chronic dysentery and diarrhoea.

Cramp bark Viburnum opulus - Vib Op is spasmolytic, sedative, astringent, smooth and skeletal muscle relaxant, cardiac tonic, uterine relaxant and anti-inflammatory It is indicated for cramps, ovarian and uterine pains, spasmodic muscular cramp, uterine dysfunction, menopausal metrorrhagia, threatened miscarriage, partus preparator, infantile enuresis. Viburnum opulus is a specific remedy for visceral tensions. It helps to relax muscular tension and spasm and is primarily used in the treatment of muscular cramps and ovarian and uterine muscle problems. It relaxes the uterus and relieves the painful cramps associated with menstruation. It may also be used in threatened miscarriage. Its astringent action gives it a role in the treatment of excessive blood loss in periods and especially bleeding associated with the menopause. It may also be used to help quieten convulsive states in children. It relaxes the cardiovascular system in hypertension and eases constipation associated with tension. It also relieves migraine headaches.

Feverfew Tanacetum parthenium  Feverfew is antiecchymotic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, aperient, bitter, carminative, emmenagogue, sedative, stimulant, stings, stomachic, vasodilator and vermifuge. Feverfew has gained a good reputation as a medicinal herb and extensive research since 1970 has proved it to be of special benefit in the treatment of certain types of migraine headaches and rheumatism. It is also thought of as a herb for treating arthritis and rheumatism. Use with caution, the fresh leaves can cause dermatitis and mouth ulcers if consumed. This remedy should not be prescribed for pregnant women. A tea made from the whole plant is used in the treatment of arthritis, colds, fevers etc. Chewing 1 - 4 leaves per day has proven to be effective in the treatment of some migraine headaches.

German Chamomile Matricaria recutita – Chamomile is anodyne, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, nervine, stomachic, tonic, and vasodilator. German chamomile is a well known herbal remedy and is much used in the West. In particular it is an excellent herb for treating various digestive disorders, nervous tension and irritability and is also used externally to treat skin problems. An infusion is particularly useful as a stomachic, nervine and sedative for young children, especially when they are teething. It is also used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia. The flowers contain various volatile oils including proazulenes. Upon steam distillation these proazulenes produce chamazulene, this is remarkably anti-allergenic and is useful in the treatment of asthma and hay fever. The flowers are sometimes added to cosmetics as an anti-allergenic agent.

Jamaica Dogwood Piscidia erythrina - Jamaica dogwood is a nervine, anodyne and anti-spasmodic. Jamaican Dogwood is a powerful sedative, used in its West Indian homeland as a fish poison. Whilst not being poisonous to humans, the given dosage level should not be exceeded. It is a powerful remedy for the treatment of painful conditions such as neuralgia and migraine. It can also be used in the relief of ovarian and uterine pain. Its main use is perhaps in insomnia where this is due to nervous tension or pain. It is indicated for inflammatory fever of any character, and in inflammatory rheumatism. In violent spasmodic cough it produces relief, In phthisis it controls the night cough and induces restful sleep. It has been highly lauded as a specific in whooping cough. It can provide pain relief in acute intestinal colic, gall-stone colic and renal colic, It has been used to lessen labour pains. Facial neuralgia seems particularly amenable to the action of piscidia. Ovarian neuralgia and pains due to straining on the uterine ligaments in displacement and tumour, are relieved by this remedy. It seems to have a satisfactory influence on all pelvic pain. In obstetrics it controls erratic pains and conduces to quiet and rest, and overcomes rigidity by its specific relaxing or antispasmodic influence, although it does not interfere with the normal uterine contractions. In the distress following the adjustment of fractured bones or reduction of dislocations, it is especially useful and satisfactory.

Wood Betony Stachys betonica Wood betony is anthelmintic, antiseptic, stringent, carminative, cathartic, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, expectorant, nervine, sedative, tonic and vulnerary. Wood betony was at one time commonly used as a medicinal plant in the treatment of a wide range of disorders, especially as a nervine and tonic for treating headaches, nervous tension and vertigo, anxiety, poor memory, neuralgia, diarrhoea, weak digestion, hypertension. It also stimulates the digestive system and the liver, having an overall tonic effect upon the body. It is taken in the treatment of 'frayed nerves', pre-menstrual complaints, poor memory and tension. It can be taken in combination with herbs such as comfrey, Symphytum officinale, and lime flowers, Tilia species, to treat sinus headaches and congestion. According to M. Grieve, Antonius Musa, chief physician to Emperor Augustus, wrote a long treatise giving at least forty-seven different uses for betony. Common uses included all maladies of the head, especially pain of a nervous origin, heart palpitations, dyspepsia, rheumatism jaundice, dropsy and scrofula. Betony is believed to be endowed with power against evil spirits, fearful visions, bad dreams and the ability to prevent drunkenness when taken prior to imbibing.
