Male Tonic

Aphrodisiac, fertility aid, performance enhancer

This tonic contains aphrodisiac, performance enhancing, Chinese tonic herbs that increase testosterone levels, strengthen erectile function, increase libido, improve sperm production & tonify the adrenal glands to improve strength & resistance.

Pharmacological actions include a natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that works like the drug Finasteride to prevent the conversion of testosterone to DHT a cancer promoting and hair follicles damaging testosterone. The tincture also contains natural Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5-I), that work like the drug Viagra to inhibit Nitric Oxide breakdown to enlarge the penis. The tincture is indicated to prevent prostate disease and male pattern baldness, elevated DHT being the main cause of this condition.

The mix is indicated to increase fertility and libido and is a general male tonic designed to increase stamina and promote resistance to stress. Although it is promoted as a fertility tonic, it can be used by any males, from business man driving 4 hours a day to get to and from work, to a world class athlete looking to increase muscle mass and stamina. It is specifically indicated for men who have sweaty or clammy palms, a condition known as palmer hyperhidrosis, which is a symptom of adrenal exhaustion.

Horny Goat Weed Epimedium sagittatum

Epimedium, also known as Horny Goat Weed, or Yin Yang Huo (Chinese: 淫羊藿) has reputed aphrodisiac qualities. According to legend, this property was discovered by a Chinese goat herder who noticed sexual activity in his flock after they ate the weed. Epimedium is an endangered species. The over-exploitation of wild populations of Epimedium for use in traditional Chinese medicine is having potentially serious consequences for the long-term survival of several species, so I don't use it personally.

The "active ingredient" in Epimedium is icariin. Icariin is purported to work by increasing levels of nitric oxide, which relax smooth muscle. Like sildenafil (Viagra), icariin, the active compound in Epimedium, inhibits the activity of PDE-5. Horny Goat weed is a natural phosphodiesterase inhibitor Plant extracts traditionally used for male impotence were tested for PDE5 Inhibition. Only icariin, the compound in Horny Goat Weed, proved to be a potent PDE5 inhibitor. Dell'Agli M. et al., Potent inhibition of human phosphodiesterase-5 by icariin derivatives. J Nat Prod. 2008 Sep;71(9):1513-7. Epub 2008 Sep 9.

Panax Ginseng / Ren Shen / 紅蔘 Chinese Ginseng Panax spp. – Chinese Ginseng is an adaptogen, aphrodisiac, cardiotonic, demulcent, hypoglycaemic agent, tonic, thymoleptic and stomachic. Panax is an adaptogen, meaning it enhances the body's resistance to external stresses and improves physical and mental performance. It acts on the central nervous, cardiovascular and endocrine systems, promotes immune function and metabolism. The hormone-like substances in the plant account for its simultaneous sedative and stimulating (adaptogenic) effect on the central nervous system. Panax improves the responses of the adrenal cortex in secreting the stress hormones possibly by interacting with receptor sites at the cortex and at the hypothalamus, variously stimulating and relaxing the central nervous system, affecting hepatic metabolism and glycogen utilisation by skeletal muscle. It has been found to have a beneficial effect on carbohydrate tolerance in diabetic patients. In China, it is also used during labour. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Panax Ginseng promotes Yang energy, improves circulation, increases blood supply, revitalises and aids recovery from weakness after illness. It is indicated for physical or mental exhaustion, stress, inadequate resistance to infections, neurasthenia, neuralgia, insomnia, hypotonia. Specifically indicated in depressive states associated with sexual inadequacy.

Tribulus / Bai Ji Li /白蒺藜 Tribulus terrestris - Tribulus is a well known aphrodisiac and male tonic. From a TCM perspective, Bai Ji Li is warming, pungent, and bitter, it calms floating Liver Yang, clears Wind-Heat (particularly from the eyes), moves Liver Qi, and relieves itching (specific for desquamation of palms and soles). Men with low testosterone levels may benefit from the use of Tribulus. Studies show that it can produce statistically significant increases in levels of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone. Bai Ji Li is a specific if low sperm counts are due to stress (Qi stagnation) and low testosterone levels.

Damiana Turnera diffusa /T. aphrodisiaca - Damiana is antidepressant, aphrodisiac, euphoric, mild diuretic, mild laxative, mild purgative, nervine, stimulant, stomachic, testosteromimetic, thymoleptic and urinary antiseptic. It is indicated for depression, nervous dyspepsia, atonic constipation, coital inadequacy, debility and lethargy. Specifically indicated in anxiety neurosis with a predominant sexual factor. Damiana is a valuable strengthening remedy for the nervous system. In particular, it has a stimulating and enhancing action on those functions related to the male reproductive system, especially where there is sexual inadequacy with a strong psychological or emotional element. The alkaloids are thought to have a testosteronal effect. It is of benefit in any debilitated condition of the central nervous system from anxiety and depression to neuralgia; and is used to contain genital herpes. Although considered to be a 'male' herb, it is not contraindicated for women with debilitated conditions.

Sarsaparilla Smilax ornata – Sarsaparilla is anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antipruritic. It is indicated for psoriasis and, chronic rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis and circulatory disorders such as erectile dysfunction(ED) and Raynauds etc. Sarsaparilla’s steroidal saponins exert an anti-inflammatory effect. It also has a diuretic action, flushing out chlorides and uric acid and therefore of benefit in gout and other rheumatic or arthritic conditions. It is also an alterative (blood cleanser) used in the treatment of psoriasis and eczema. It is used as a tonic for sexual functioning and also as a rejuvenating tonic to boost stamina and energy. Body-builders strongly maintain that sarsaparilla helps to build muscle mass, while avoiding the harmful side effects of anabolic steroids. In men, the herb is said to stimulate production of natural hormones (testosterone), which may help to restore both sexual interest and erectile function. Perhaps this is the reason that the "Good Guys" of the Old West, who disdained whiskey in favour of Sarsaparilla, always seemed to have that extra edge. As a circulatory stimulant, sarsaparilla promotes blood flow to the genitals thereby increasing libido.

Saw palmetto Serenoa serrulata– Saw palmetto is anabolic agent, aphrodisiac, endocrine agent, diuretic, urinary antiseptic, relaxant, sedative, tonic to the male reproductive system, particularly the prostate, reduces congestive catarrhal conditions of the respiratory system. It is indicated for chronic or sub-acute cystitis, prostatic hypertrophy, catarrh of the genito-urinary tract, testicular atrophy and sex hormone disorders. It is known as the 'plant catheter' because of its tonic effect on the neck of the bladder and on the prostate. It is prescribed for debilitated conditions of the male reproductive system such as testicular atrophy, low libido and impotence. As a natural 5 alpha reductase inhibitor, it is specific for prostate cancer and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome PCOS. Serenoa is also believed to be effective for functional infertility in women and to increase the supply of mother's milk. The berries have a toning and soothing influence on mucous membranes throughout the body as well as an expectorant property, making this a useful remedy for colds and catarrh. It has a traditional use for asthma and bronchitis. The berries are also used to treat urinary disorders and enuresis, and are of value in all infections of the urinary tract. Serenoa is reputed to be mildly sedative to the nervous system.
