Ginger Zingiber officinalis, Black horehound Ballota nigra, Chamomile Matricaria recutita, Peppermint Mentha piperata
Ginger root Zingiber officinalis – Ginger is antitussive, antiemetic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, adjuvant, circulatory stimulant, carminative, diaphoretic, rubefacient, sialagogue, expectorant, antiseptic. It is specifically an anti-emetic and suitable to treat motion sickness or morning sickness. In TCM it is said to relieve nausea resulting from invasion of the Spleen by an overactive Liver. In herbal medicine, ginger is regarded as an excellent carminative (a substance which promotes the elimination of intestinal gas) and intestinal spasmolytic (a substance which relaxes and soothes the intestinal tract). Modern scientific research has revealed that ginger has antioxidant and direct anti-inflammatory effects. Ginger's anti-vomiting action has been shown to be very useful in reducing the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, even the most severe form, hyperemesis gravidum, a condition usually requiring hospitalisation.
Black horehound Ballota nigra – Black horehound is an antiemetic, nervine, astringent, emmenagogue and expectorant. It may be used with safety in motion sickness for example, where the nausea is triggered through the inner ear and the central nervous system. This herb will also be of value in helping the vomiting of pregnancy or nausea and vomiting due to nervousness. This herb is specific for hyperemesis gravidum.
German ChamomileMatricaria recutita – Chamomile is anodyne, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, nervine, stomachic, tonic, and vasodilator. In particular it is an excellent herb for insomnia, anxiety, menopausal depression, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, colic, aches and pains of flu, migraine, neuralgia, teething, vertigo, motion sickness, conjunctivitis, inflamed skin, urticaria etc. An infusion is particularly useful as a stomachic, nervine and sedative for young children, especially when they are teething. It is also used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia. The flowers contain various volatile oils including proazulenes. Upon steam distillation these proazulenes produce chamazulene, this is remarkably anti-allergenic and is useful in the treatment of asthma and hay fever. The flowers are sometimes added to cosmetics as an anti-allergenic agent. Chamomile is used for. It is also known as an aromatic with a traditional application in morning sickness.
Peppermint / Bo He Mentha piperata - Peppermint is antispasmodic, antiemetic carminative, choleretic, diaphoretic, aromatic, nervine, peripheral vasodilator with a paradoxical cooling effect, cholagogue, bitter. It is indicated for intestinal colic, vomiting of pregnancy, flatulent dyspepsia, biliary disorders, common cold, dysmenorrhoea. Peppermint is specifically indicated in flatulent digestive pains, Mentha has a notable action on the lower bowel. It reduces nausea and is helpful in travel sickness. It promotes sweating in fevers and influenza. As a nervine it acts as a tonic, easing anxiety, tension and hysteria. In dysmenorrhoea it relieves the pain and associated tension. The pharmacological actions of Mentha are largely due to the volatile oil, which is carminative and a potent spasmolytic, acting locally to produce visceral muscle relaxation. The volatile oil acts as a mild anaesthetic to the mucous membrane of the stomach, relieving nausea and the desire to vomit. It reduces the tone of the cardiac sphincter and relaxes the gastro-oesophageal sphincter, allowing expulsion of air in flatulent dyspepsia. It relieves colonic spasm and bowel irritability and is specific for IBS. Chronic disease of the pancreas also responds well to peppermint, as do abnormal fermentation processes in the intestine, for example, when the bowel flora is abnormal. Menthol is bactericidal and antiparasitic. Dissolved in alcohol, it is effective against ringworm and other fungal infestations. It is also four times as powerful an antiseptic as phenol. The flavonoids contribute to the spasmolytic activity, and flavonoids and phenolic acids to the choleretic activity - it promotes liver and gallbladder function. In TCM Peppermint is pungent , aromatic and cool. It enters the lung and liver meridian. It is said to expel wind-heat to treat fever, headache, and cough, clears head and eyes and aids throat, sore throat, red eyes, headache, clears rashes and moves liver Qi stagnation to alleviate emotional, gynaecological disorders.
