Notes on herbs in pregnancy

Whilst these herbs are safe in pregnancy, there is a general rule that nothing should be taken in the first trimester. There are however, herbs traditionally used to prevent miscarriage of course these would be taken in the first trimester. You may be pregnant and get a bladder infection or flu woth secondary bacterial infection and not want to take antibiotics. IN this case there are many safe herbs but these should be professionally prescribed. If you have any history of miscarriage also please get expert advice. I have 7 children and am an expert in herbs during pregnancy and breasfeeding.  Book a Skype consult to ensure safe prescription.

Blood Tonic

This tincture contains a blend of herbs traditionally used to tonify the blood. The herbs are mineral rich in particular, naturally rich in Iron, Vitamin C and B12. It is indicated for symptoms including palpitations poor memory, insomnia, shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, excessive dreaming, constipation and pale complexion.

Alfalfa Medicago sativa - Alfalfa is anodyne, antibacterial, antiscorbutic, aperient, diuretic, emetic, febrifuge, haemostatic, nutritive, stimulant and tonic. Alfalfa is high in protein and contains vitamins A, B1, B63 B 12, C, E and K, along with the minerals calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc. Alfalfa leaves have traditionally been used as a nutritive tonic to stimulate the appetite and promote weight gain. The plant has an oestrogenic action and could prove useful in treating problems related to menstruation and the menopause. Alfalfa is prescribed for debility in convalescence or anaemia, haemorrhage, menopausal complaints, pre-menstrual tension, fibroids etc. The leaves are rich in vitamin K, which is used medicinally to encourage the clotting of blood. The plant is grown commercially as a source of chlorophyll and carotene, both of which have proven health benefits. The leaves also contain the anti-oxidant tricin. Extracts of the plant are antibacterial.

Nettle leaf Urtica dioica – Nettle is astringent, haemostatic, dermatological agent, mild diuretic, tonic; extracts are reported to have hypoglycaemic properties. Nettle is also a natural anti-histamine. It is indicated for rheumatic conditions, uterine haemorrhage, cutaneous eruptions, infantile and psychogenic eczema, epistaxis, melaena. Nettel is specifically indicated in nervous eczema. Nettles are rich in vitamins A, C, D, iron, potassium, manganese, and calcium and chlorophyll making nettle an excellent blood tonic and remedy in anaemia and other debilitated states. They strengthen and support the whole body. Throughout Europe they are used as a spring tonic and general detoxifying remedy. They are specific for rheumatism, arthritis and eczema especially associated with blood deficiency. The herb has an important effect on the kidney and on fluid and uric acid excretion, so is of benefit in gout and other arthritic conditions, particularly if there is an element of anaemia. Urtica is also of benefit in chronic skin conditions such as eczema, helping to cleanse the body of accumulated toxins. Urtica is known to stimulate milk flow in nursing mothers, and is often used in this way by farmers for their stock. It has been shown experimentally to have both hypoglycaemic and hyperglycaemic properties, the hypoglycaemic component being ‘urticin’. Nettle leaf extract contains active compounds that reduce TNF-α and other inflammatory cytokines.

Dang Gui Angelica sinensis / Angelica archangelica – Dang gui is antispasmodic, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic and tonic. Dang Gui is used for loss of appetite, gastrointestinal spasms, feeling of fullness, and flatulence. It is also used as part of a multi-ingredient preparation for treating premature ejaculation. Dang gui is combined with liguisticum, peony, and foxglove roots to create the famous formulas for building the Blood - Si Wu Tang. This formula is basic to treating amenorrhoea (missed periods) and dysmenorrhoea. Cinnamon twig is added if menstrual pain is due to cold uterus. This formula is recommended in pregnancy as it is extensively used in China and Japan and has been monitored in many large-scale clinical trials with pregnant women. Angelica has a long folk-history of use as a medicinal herb, in particular for the treatment of digestive disorders and problems with blood circulation. It stimulates blood flow to the peripheral parts of the body and so is of value in treating poor circulation.

Astragalus / Huang Qi Astragalus membranaceus - Astragalus is an adaptogen, antibacterial, anti-cancer, cardiotonic, diuretic, febrifuge, hypoglycaemic, hypotensive, pectoral, tonic, uterine tonic and vasodilator. Huang Qi is commonly used in Chinese herbalism. The root is a sweet tonic herb that stimulates the immune system and many organs of the body, whilst lowering blood pressure and blood sugar levels. It is particularly suited to young, physically active people, increasing stamina and endurance and improving resistance to the cold. For younger people it is superior to ginseng in this respect. Huang Qi is used especially for treatment of the kidneys and also to avoid senility. It is used in the treatment of cancer, prolapse of the uterus or anus, abscesses and chronic ulcers, chronic nephritis with oedema and proteinuria. Recent research in the West has shown that the root can increase the production of interferon and macrophages and thus help restore normal immune function in cancer patients. Patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy recover faster and live longer if given Huang Qi concurrently. It increases the production of blood cells. In TCM, astragalus is said to tonify spleen & lung Qi, raise Spleen & Stomach Qi and is used to treat prolapse, tonify Wei Qi to boost the immune system, tonify Qi & blood due to loss of blood to treat postpartum fever. The most important ingredient medicinally in the root is paeoniflorin, which has been shown to have a strong antispasmodic effect. It also reduces blood pressure, reduces body temperature caused by fever and protects against stress ulcers. It is taken internally in the treatment of menstrual disorders, injuries, high blood pressure, pre-menstrual tension and liver disorders. Ginger root Zingiber officinalis– Ginger is antiseptic, antiflatulent, antitussive, antiemetic, antiinflammatory, adjuvant, diaphoretic, carminative, expectorant, peripheral circulatory stimulant, rubefacient, spasmolytic and sialagogue. It is indicated for poor circulation, chilblains and cramp and nausea. In feverish conditions Zingiber's diaphoretic action promotes perspiration. As a carminative it promotes gastric secretion and is used in the treatment of dyspepsia, flatulence and colic. It is also a useful remedy in diarrhoea where there is no inflammation or due to spleen Qi deficiency. It is stimulant to the gastro-intestinal tract, increasing peristalsis and the tone of the intestinal muscle. As an anti-emetic it can be used in cases morning sickness. It is also said to be useful for suppressed menstruation. Extracts of ginger stimulate the vasomotor and respiratory centres. Warming digestive tonic, this remedy will increase hydrochloric acid and improve iron absorption. Ginger contains very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols. These substances are believed to explain why so many people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis experience reductions in their pain levels and improvements in their mobility when they consume ginger regularly. Ginger extracts have been shown to have both antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour effects on cells. Gingerols, the main active components in ginger and the ones responsible for its distinctive flavour, may also inhibit the growth of human colorectal cancer cells. Lab experiments showed that gingerols, the active phytonutrients in ginger, kill ovarian cancer cells by inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) and autophagocytosis (self-digestion). In TCM fresh ginger is said to be pungent and warm. It enters the lung, spleen and stomach meridians. It is said to release the exterior and disperse cold in middle jiao and is indicated for vomiting. It is also said to disperse cold phlegm in lungs and is indicated for chronic and acute cough. Ginger reduces toxicity of other herbs and adjusts ying and wei Qi for sweating without improvement.

Curled dock Rumex crispus – Curled dock is an alterative, antiscorbutic, astringent, anti-cancer, cholagogue, depurative, laxative, poultice and tonic. Dock leaves are an excellent source of both vitamin A and protein, and are rich in iron and potassium When compared to spinach, curly dock has "... 1/3 more protein, iron, calcium, potassium, beta carotene and phosphorus." Plus, it has "... more than double the vitamin C (Steve Brill book p238)." Curled dock is a gentle and safe laxative, less powerful than rhubarb in its action so it is particularly useful in the treatment of mild constipation. The anthraquinones present have a markedly cathartic action on the bowel, but in this herb they act in a mild way, possible tempered by the tannin content. It is a gentle and safe laxative, less powerful than rhubarb. It is used internally in the treatment of constipation, diarrhoea, piles, bleeding of the lungs, various blood complaints and also chronic skin diseases. The plant has valuable cleansing properties and is useful for treating a wide range of skin problems such as psoriasis. The root has been used with positive effect to restrain the inroads made by cancer, being used as an alterative and tonic.
