This tincture contains a blend of herbs use as a partus preparatory. They should be used 6 weeks prior to birth to ensure an easy delivery. The herbs act to improve blood flow to the uterus thereby improving the strength and contractility of the uterine muscle so that the contractions that are experienced are regular and more efficient to deliver your baby faster. The herbs also assist the contraction of the uterus after birth so that you get back to your pre-pregnancy shape. I do a mix specificallyto relieve the pain of childbirth called Carahealth Birth aid, which I use in labour and having had 6 seem to be somewhat of an authority on the subject :) See it under the full range.
Milk thistle Silybum marinarum – Milk thistle is astringent, bitter, cholagogue, demulcent, diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, galactogogue, hepatic, stimulant, stomachic and tonic. Milk thislet is the trophorestorative of the liver. Milk Thistle can be used to increase the secretion and flow of bile from the liver and gall bladder and contains constituents, which protect liver cells from chemical damage. Silymarin, an extract from the seed, acts on the membranes of the liver cells preventing the entry of virus toxins and other toxic compounds and thus preventing damage to the cells from toxic chemicals and medications. It is used internally in the treatment of liver and gall bladder diseases, jaundice, cirrhosis, hepatitis and poisoning. It is indicated in skin complaints associated with a sluggish liver. As a galactogogue it specifically stimulates the flow of breast milk. Milk thistle also lowers cholesterol levels, reducing insulin resistance and reduces the growth of cancer cells in breast, cervical and prostate cancers. Regeneration of the liver is particularly important in the treatment of cancer since this disease is always characterised by a severely compromised and often partially destroyed liver.
Blue cohosh Caulophyllum thalictroides - Blue cohosh is anthelmintic, antispasmodic, birthing aid, diaphoretic, diuretic, emmenagogue, oxytoxic and sedative. Blue cohosh is a traditional herb of many North American Indian tribes and was used extensively by them to facilitate child birth. Modern herbalists still consider it to be a woman's herb and it is commonly used to treat various gynaecological conditions. An acrid, bitter, warming herb, it stimulates the uterus, reduces inflammation, expels intestinal worms and has diuretic effects. An infusion of the root in warm water is taken for about 2 weeks before the expected birth date in order to ease the birth. This infusion can also be used as an emmenagogue and a uterine stimulant. Blue cohosh should therefore be used with some caution by women who are in an earlier stage of pregnancy since it can induce a miscarriage or early delivery. The plant is also taken internally in the treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease, rheumatism and gout. It should not be prescribed for people with hypertension and heart diseases.
Rasberry leaf Rubus idaeus - Raspberry leaf is an astringent, digestive remedy, tonic, refrigerant, parturient and uterine stimulant. The fruit is diuretic, laxative, diaphoretic and cleansing. It is indicated for diarrhoea, pregnancy, stomatitis as a gargle for tonsillitis or an eye lotion for conjunctivitis. Rubus leaves have a long tradition of use during pregnancy to strengthen and tone uterine tissue, assisting contractions and checking haemorrhage during labour. For this action to occur the herb should be drunk regularly throughout the last trimester of pregnancy and during labour. The use of this herb in traditional partus prep is the ideal way to take this herb to prepare the uterus for birth. The infusion also enriches and encourages the flow of breast milk.
Squaw vine / Squaw berry Mitchella repens - Squaw vine is primarily a partus preparator, uterine relaxant, antidysmenorrhoeic, emmenagogue, astringent, nervous tonic and restorative. It is indicated for dysmenorrhoea, pregnancy and catarrhal colitis. Specifically indicated for the facilitation of parturition. Mitchella is reputed to promote an easy labour by aiding contraction of the womb during childbirth. It is also recommended for dysmenorrhoea and other painful conditions of the female reproductive tract. It also has a calming effect on the nervous system and, in addition, improves the digestion. It may be used in nervous exhaustion, irritability or debility in either sex, especially when symptoms involve the reproductive system.

All herbal tinctures come in 200ml bottles, taken at either 5ml 3 x day or 7 1/2 ml 2 x day. One bottle taken at this therapeutic dose will last 2 weeks. All herbs are either 1 in 1s or 1 in 2s meaning they are 1 part herb in 1 or 2 parts liquid respectively, as opposed to other herbs on the Irish and UK market which are either 1 in 3s or 1 in 5s. Therefore my tinctures are at least 2 x greater in strength and effectiveness. They are also organic or wildcrafted where available and I do not use endangered species.
Whilst the Carahealth Herbal Tincture range has been formulated to have no negative drug/herb interactions. If you are on medication, pregnant or breastfeeding, I recommend getting expert naturopathic advice on herbal contraindications and drug/herb interactions by booking a Skype consult.
