Set a tape trap

If you think you've seen or felt a worm but aren't sure, you can set a pinworm trap with sticky tape. Rolled a cylinder, sticky side out. Just before bed, place the tape over the anus. When the worm crawls out to lay its eggs, the eggs or even the worm may get stuck to the tape. In the morning, save the tape (and the worm/eggs, if there is one), and take it to your doctor to have analysed.

Wash the sheets

If you or your children are being treated for worms, thoroughly wash your bed linen and pillowcases in hot water to kill any worm eggs that may be clinging to the sheets. Pinworms are very contagious Wash your hands. Ever work in the dirt and then eat lunch without washing your hands? You may be introducing worms into you own body. Worm eggs and larvae can get under your fingernails when you've been working outside.

Stop thumb and finger sucking

Tiny fingers that have been playing in the sandbox should not make their way into your child's mouth.

Eat only well-cooked pork, beef and fish

Some worms that live in pigs, beef cattle and fish can actually end up making their home inside you if larvae living in the meat isn't killed during cooking.

Wormwood Artemisia absinthum – Wormwood is anthelmintic antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, emmenagogue, febrifuge, hypnotic, stimulant, tomachic, tonic and vermifuge. Wormwood is a very bitter plant with a long history of use as a medicinal herb. It is valued especially for its tonic effect on the liver, gallbladder and digestive system, and for its vermicidal activity. It is an extremely useful medicine for those with weak and under-active digestion. It increases stomach acid and bile production, improving digestion and the absorption of nutrients. It also eases wind and bloating and, if taken regularly, helps the body return to full vitality after a prolonged illness.. It should not be prescribed for children or pregnant women. The extremely bitter quality stimulates the appetite. The bitter taste on the tongue sets off a reflex action, stimulating stomach and other digestive secretions.

Black horehound Ballota nigra– Black horehound is an antiemetic, antispasmodic, stimulant and vermifuge. Black horehound has a long history of herbal use and a range of medicinal qualities, being especially effective in its action as an antiemetic and is a specific to treat morning sickness. It is a uselful antiemetic to prevent sickness whiles treating worms. In the past it was often used for treating problems connected with the respiratory system, convulsions, low spirits and the menopause, but present-day authorities differ over whether it was effective in these applications. It is taken internally in the treatment of nervous dyspepsia, travelling sickness, morning sickness in pregnancy, arthritis, gout, menstrual disorders and bronchial complaints.

Cascara sagrada /Buckthorn Rhamnus purshiana- Buckthorn is a stimulating laxative, hepatic and bitter, purgative and tonic. Buckthorn contains anthraquinone glycosides, a stimulating laxative. It is used in a worm mix to purge the bowels after the worms are killed. Cascara sagrada is widely used as a gentle laxative that restores tone to the bowel muscles and thus makes repeated doses unnecessary. It is considered suitable for delicate and elderly persons and is very useful in cases of chronic constipation. The bark also has tonic properties, promoting gastric digestion and appetite. As well as its uses as a laxative, it is taken internally in the treatment of digestive complaints, haemorrhoids, liver problems and jaundice. Cascara Sagrada may be used in chronic constipation as it encourages peristalsis and tones relaxed muscles of the digestive system. It should not be prescribed for pregnant or lactating women, or patients with intestinal obstruction.

Fenugreek seeds Trigonella foenum-graecum Fenugreek is anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, cardiotonic, carminative, demulcent, deobstruent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, febrifuge, galactogogue, hypoglycaemic, hypocholesterolamic, hypotensive, laxative, parasiticide, restorative and uterine tonic. Fenugreek is much used in herbal medicine, especially in North Africa, the Middle East and India. Research has shown that the seeds can inhibit cancer of the liver, lower blood cholesterol levels and also have an antidiabetic effect. The seed yields a strong mucilage and is therefore useful in the treatment of inflammation and ulcers of the stomach and intestines. I have combined fenugreek in this formula for its soothing demulcent and anti-inflammatory effects The seed is very nourishing and body-building and is one of the most effective tonics in cases of physical debility caused by anaemia or by infectious diseases, especially where a nervous factor is involved. It is also used in the treatment of late-onset diabetes, poor digestion (especially in convalescence), insufficient lactation, painful menstruation, labour pains etc. The seeds freshen bad breath and restore a dulled sense of taste. One of its constituent alkaloids, called 'trigonelline', has shown potential for use in cancer therapy. The seed contains the saponin diosgenin, an important substance in the synthesis of oral contraceptives and sex hormones. Fenugreek acts as a carminative to lessen any colic associated with constipation. In Ayurvedic medicine, Methi (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is known to have anti-carcinogenic properties and reduce blood cholesterol levels. It is also used as a laxative. The seeds should not be prescribed medicinally for pregnant women since they can induce uterine contractions.
